Tongariro National Park is the oldest national park located in New Zealand. If you venture to the central North Island. It has been acknowledged by UNESCO as one of the 28 mixed cultural and natural World Heritage. The park covers around 80,000 hectares.

Getting to Tongariro National Park[]

It is easily accessed by road, and is only a 4-5 hour drive from either Auckland or Wellington. The nearest towns are National Park Village, Ohakune and Turangi. The small village of Whakapapa is located within the park. If you're hiring a car, it's advised to get a 4wd.
