Getting to New Zealand[]

The principal ports are Auckland, Dunedin, Lyttelton, Opua, Picton and Wellington, which are served by international shipping lines sailing from the USA and from Europe. A few cruise ships visit New Zealand, but there are no regular passenger ship services.

Exploring New Zealand[]

New Zealand is a great place to explore, no matter what age. Families with young children, through to retirees taking the last big holiday of a lifetime, New Zealand suits all. Consider the route you are planning well though, driving in New Zealand is an enjoyable thing, around every bend another fantastic view, a new place to explore, or a spot to relax a while. Plan to drive around 150 km per day on average, its more than enough. Planning vast routes of both the islands in two weeks is just going to leave you feeling that you have scratched the surface and not had time to actually see and do too much. The most enjoyable way to explore New Zealand is by motorhome. It may not be something you would consider in your own country, but in New Zealand it makes travelling more enjoyable. There are lots of options to choose from, but if you are looking to spend a few weeks on the road, it will be worth considering something that will cater to all your creature comforts, keep you warm, no matter what the weather, and a good night's sleep is certainly going to help. Optimum time for the South Island - 3 to 4 weeks, and for the North Island 3 weeks. Motorhomes can be hired in Auckland and Christchurch [1]. One way hires are also available with most companies.
