Kanchenjunga Summits as viewed from Darjeeling, India
Darjeeling, located at an elevation of around elevation of 2,134 m (6,982 ft), is the district headquarters of Darjeeling district, one of the districts of the Indian state of West Bengal. The literal meaning of Darjeeling is the land of the thunderbolt. Darjeeling is famous for its tea and Darjeeling Himalayan Railway is one of the UNESCO's World Heritage Sites. Darjeeling and adjoining areas lie in the picturesque Shiwalik Hills, lower ranges of the Himalayas, and has been described as the queen among the hill stations of India.

The thrill of traveling on a moving World Heritage Site and watching the bright Kanchenjunga Peaks from the Tiger Hill read more are two among them. Ever heard of a World Heritage Site on the move? You may experience one if you so wish while planning a trip to Darjeeling. Darjeeling Himalayan Railways [1] is one of the UNESCO's World Heritage "Sites".Your exploration of the enchanting Himalayan beauty sprawled all around Darjeeling may begin with something, which is not natural, but mad made. It sounds funny. Is not it? But, if you have to enjoy the natural splendour of Darjeeling and the area around it, a ride on the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway is one of the best ideas despite hearing the hissing sound of the steam engine and despite the smell of coal smoke emitting from the engine. The old faithful engine has been working without a break for last several decades pulling the coaches along the meandering tracks. On your way, you shall be able to watch and relish the scenic splendour of the Himalayas on your way up or the way down whichever way you may be traveling. During the train journey one should be alert to watch and feel wonderful movement of the train: the train passes through a loop, called Batasia Loop. It is an engineering marvel, particularly so as it was build decades above. The train passes through the loop in a slow motion before it straitens up again! If you are not lucky and the fogs envelope the environment, you may feel a bit dejected – yet you may feel the fresh air and the fragrance of life all around. You are passing through the land of Darjeeling Tea, the best in the world! Nothing shall be more wonderful if the weather is clear and you are able to watch the shining snow-covered peaks of the Kanchenjunga.
Tiger Hill[]
In India, you may have majestic views of the Himalayas from many points of North India, particularly from the Indian states of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttaranchal; and from many points in Nepal, a northern neighbour country of India. However, there is a breathtaking view of the Himalayas which is really awesome and considered the best – it is a view of the majestic Kanchenjunga and its tallest peaks as seen from the Tiger Hill near Darjeeling, or better still from Sandakphu provided you are willing to undertake a 10-hour trek from Darjeeling. The rising sun makes the peaks shining bright and even when the clouds of the rainy seasons make the environment darker, you may find a shaft of sunlight striking the peaks. The feeling shall be serene and you may get a feeling of utmost bondage with the mighty Himalayas.

Nightlife[]
Like most of the cities of India, Darjeeling too does not have a night life in the conventional sense. As such, expecting a disco and dusk-to-down festivity is out of question in this place located around 7,000 ft high. However, many restaurants and hotels have bars and pubs attached to them: for example, Kurseong Tourist Lodge and Windemere Hotel. The bar at the Windemere Hotel is rather cozy and has an intimate environment. Here, even 15 or 20 people would mean a crowd, and conversations just start and continue for long. You may find live bands playing at some of the restaurants.
