Burkina Faso, a landlocked country in the western part of Africa, is surrounded by six countries, namely, Mali, Niger, Benin, Togo, Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire. Its former name was the Republic of Upper Volta, and it acquired its present name in 1984. Burkino Faso means in "the land of upright people" or "upright land" in Mossi and Dioula languages, the major native languages of the country. The people who live in Burkino Faso are called Burkinabè or Burkinabé (pronounced [burkiːnəˈbeː]).
